Corinna White's Story:


I guess I'd consider myself a normal sort of person.

But I remember as a little girl feeling very different! Knowing there was something more; holding my little secret till I was alone and letting my wealth of imagination soar for fear of being laughed at. Then life took over as unfortunately it does for most of us telling me what I should do & must strive for. In a short 7 years or so that beautiful phase of life where fairies were real & we live mostly in that happy, creative Theta brainwave state of life transforming under a barrage of conditioning and forsaken for the Beta stress sign, anxiety & depression inducing state that modern life requires us to be present in.

I have come to believe that as a race we unwittingly numb the very qualities we are meant to develop & flourish for the evolutionary growth of humanity. But society plods on with the old school thinking & our children become carbon copies or polar opposites of us leaving very little room for life transforming evolution. It's difficult to break the mould in a world conditioned to conformity where stress signs, anxiety & depression flourish and are almost considered the norm. And almost impossible for it to breakthrough once our essence is forgotten.


The Conditioning - an Illustration
My early life was a poor one of financial depression. Bit of a cliché story I guess, parents married as teenagers, dad did a runner very early on. Brought up in a council house by a high anxiety mum, a single mother, who's fear & anxiety of the bills arriving ingrained itself in me to a such a point that I developed a severe stress signs & anxiety collecting the post in later life!

We lived in a world where children weren't heard. (yoga & meditation were definitely not words in the vocabulary!), and a social environment which knew 'wealth' wasn't for us. Wealth was most definitely for other people; 'oh, how the other half lived'. Life transforming things just didn't happen to us.

But although this stress & anxiety belonged to my mum and I picked them up 'by accident'; that didn't stop them controlling & frustrating my life for decades through stress signs & anxiety. They were absorbed and ingrained subconsciously as if my own; creating frustrating stress signs & anxiety as a result of the conflict between my heart & my head. A source of emotional pain to last a lifetime considering I had subconsciously vowed very early on to become the polar opposite of my mum to avoid the stress & anxiety pain I saw she was in. I didn't exactly feel well!


The feather, the Brick & the Bus
I conformed, of course, as most of us do, and life progressed. An excited girl with a wealth of motivation emerged into the world, raring to go with a determined vision of life transforming to be part of 'the other half'. Do this differently to my family. Prove my worth. Find wealth.

In my 20's: I worked hard, (harder than anyone else I knew in the hope I could measure up to 'the other half' because that wasn't really for me, right?). Work, work, work. Get the edge, keep the edge. High anxiety. Don't let anyone discover my fraud. I put all other interests aside, determined to reach my goals and see my life transforming. I did very little for relaxation. Yoga & meditation were way too slow for my world back then!

I talked a lot. But I didn't listen much (after all, people don't hear you anyway - see my poem above). I developed a fantastic system of rail-roading everyone to get whatever I needed. I was good at it. I got results.

In my 30's: I got to where I'd told myself I was going career-wise relatively quickly. So far it had been life transforming . I had wealth relative to my upbringing. Now what? I felt kind of lost to be honest. And I didn't exactly feel well. The stress of years of constant work & very little for relaxation and the high anxiety were taking their toll. I was living on the edge, not valuing my Self. But I had to work, work, work; keep the edge. Not let anyone discover my fraud. After all, I had become 'the other half'! I had wealth, reached my goal. But I was tired and I was lost, suffering mild depression. The stress signs were there and the universe was tickling me with it's feather. But I didn't know how to listen.

I made some attempts at change to feel well (not yoga or meditation! Mostly high impact fast aerobics... it had to be fast to feed my anxiety). I tried to change my career, but my early conditioning was strong & those around me didn't understand. My subconscious fought back & won. I gave up trying to change. Discontent set in. My marriage failed, I burned out badly. The stress signs I had ignored reached their finale spectacularly! The Universe's brick had hit me full in the face. Surely this would be life transforming? Strangely, like a lemming, I fought to return to my place in 'the other half'. The early conditioning was too strong. I was waiting for the proverbial bus. And come, it did.


My Bus
On the 4th of June 1998, my little brother, John, got out of bed and hung himself from the back of his bedroom door. He was 28 years old. He had suffered from undiagnosed clinical depression most of his adult life. Although seeking help in many ways, his depression was never diagnosed.

The grief was overwhelming & unrelenting. It opened the door to my soul, left me vulnerable & exposed. I had tried to help him with his depression for many years and at, with tragic irony, the point we all felt John was better & on his feet again: we lost him.

Afterwards we discovered this is often typical for those who are suffering depression and at risk of suicide. If you know someone suffering depression and at risk of suicide please be aware that they often find some peace once they have made their exit plan and appear to be in a better place emotionally.

Eventually, when it subsided just enough, it put me on a slow journey of self-recovery and discovery. A greater purpose.
The futility & waste of his beautiful life was too much to bear. The loss was intolerable. There had to be something to hold on to. Luckily I found it. A simple little phrase in a book which someone handed to me which stopped me in my tracks & gave me hope & meaning. It said:

'Emotional pain (meaning stress signs, anxiety & depression) is not meant to be 'painful'. It is meant to be 'growingful'. It is futile unless we learn from it. Each pain we experience in life comes to us with a gift. You just have to find it. And when you do, you will grow and then the pain will lessen.

I started to look for my gift. It turns out John's gift to me was the greatest gift anyone could give. My journey to inner peace & meaningful life purpose through emotional fitness had begun. Something to hold on to, to make a little sense out of the senseless.

This didn't mean life was easy. I still had to find the clues, pick up the pieces & put them all together. It took 10 years. But the fears & anxiety have gone. My false are directors silent & I have the emotional fitness, inner strength & power to value my 'self'. My life has direction & purpose. I wake feeling calm & happy. At peace with myself. I have no fear. For a former anxiety sufferer this is a profound state. The gratitude I feel simply for this state of meditation & reflection, I have no words to describe.

I am grateful for everything which has brought me to this point. Everything. And I want to share what I have learned. This is for everyone out there living with emotional pain & discomfort. It is possible to heal and achieve life transforming Emotional Fitness and feel well every day.
